Lucy and the Lucky Four (LATL4) have come a long way in a short time. Armstrong (BC) high school classmates Shane Coates (vocals, guitar), Levi Glass (bass), Liam Tyner (guitar, vocals), and Enderby drummer Nathan Marcetta hooked up in 2008 and started jamming in Liam’s basement, because “there was nothing better to do” in their two small towns. They quickly developed a mature, funky blues rock sound and a cohesiveness you don’t often hear in high school garage bands. After less than a year of practising and writing songs in the basement, LATL4 got their first big break at their very first public gig, a performance at the Our Kids Have Talent Competition in Vernon. Playing to an audience of 800, along with nine other acts, some of whom had played and recorded professionally, LATL4 wowed the audience and the judges and placed third, earning them the right to play to a much larger audience at the Rarearth Jazz & Blues Festival, with acts including Buddy Guy and Jimmy Bowskill, later in the summer of 2009. That summer gave the boys plenty of time to hone their craft, both in the basement and at shows in a variety of venues around the Okanagan Valley, including festivals, benefits, open mikes, weddings and headline performances. Backed by the driving rhythms set down by drummer Marcetta and Glass’s funky bass lines, front man Coates boasts a deep, bluesy voice and a stage presence that belie his sixteen years, while lead guitarist Tyner plays solos and riffs reminiscent of Hendrix and John Frusciante. Building on their success from Rarearth, in September LATL4 entered and won the Astral Media Youth Talent Competition at the Interior Provincial Exhibition (IPE) in Armstrong. Part of the Canadian Association of Fairs & Exhibitions’ Canadian Youth Talent Competition, their triumph at the IPE will catapult them on to a much bigger stage at the National Finals in Charlottetown (PEI) this November. While their talent, maturity and positive attitude give them a good chance to succeed at this and even higher levels, their passion for the music means that, win or lose, Lucy and the Lucky Four will keep on playing, whether in the basement or on the stages of their dreams.
